[HMDS] First GKid/TSL Joint Workshop

Today we tried to combine the students in Global Kids Playing 4 Keeps program (they make games) with TSL residents, in a joint workshop.

First, the GK Leaders, on their own, learned some building basics: take a photo, make a box, and add the photo as a texture to the box. Below Davian took a photo (in the daytime) of our gathering and I took a photo (in the night time) of his build next to the items he photographed:

Unfortunately, once we brought the two groups together, it got disrupted before it could begin. However, we had a great turnout and all seemed excited to introduce better security next time and try it again.

People act out in TSL just as teens act out in real life - by making a nuisance of themselves and drawing attention away from everything else. But TSL offers, shall we say, new and improved ways of causing a ruckus. I'll avoid details, so as not to reward today's misbehavior with more attention, but I can discuss it in a more general sense.

The worst thing that can happen to teens who like to disrupt group activities within GK is that they are kicked out of the program (in my six years I have only had to do that once). In TSL, one way to cause a problem is to literally slow activities down to a crawl by creating lag. The more people and objects occupying the same real world server space, the more work the server has to perform to keep viewing the same space, at the same time. If someone creates too many objects at once, on purpose, severe lag will occur. And that's what happened today.

Now, unlike in person where I can walk up to a teen and drag him out of the room, I can't do that in TSL during lag. It's worse than walking through molasses. It's more like swimming in jello wearing a garbage bag, backwards. As such I couldn't find the culprit to eject them. I DO have an option if I find them - to ejected them from the space and/or eject & ban. I ejected one person who was shooting people, but the lag kicked in before I could hit ban.

However, in situations like this when suddenly everything in SL feels chaotic and unmanageable, the teens keep their calm and knew what to do. First, two teens identified an invisible box that was producing rude behavior. As it was invisible they "touched it", creating a stream of light from them to the box, so I could delete it (as visitors they have no power to delete objects not their own). Then a number of teens called in the Lindens. I was so befuddled I never even saw them arrive - but like the cavalry they rode up, cleared out the culprit, and rode off.

It means a lot to me to see the teens turn so quickly to a Linden for help. It means they know how to protect themselves. When they find someone they think is an adult, they call a Linden (a threat I have often received until I am heard out). If someone is being insulting or physically abusive to someone else, which is against the TOA (terms of agreement) they call the Lindens. If someone is disrupting a GK activity, they call a Linden.

The Lindens act like sheriffs in this wild west environment, but it would be impossible for them to police it all. The safety, that exists, to the extent that it does, is only possible because of the collaboration between the empowered, responsible teens who raise appropriate alarms and the Lindens who fairly and transparently exercise their powers.

I wish more teens turned to thoughtful and appropriate authority figures for help at the slightest hint of trouble that is beyond their resources to control.

A few teens offered to police the event next time, half jokingly. One suggested we turn off the ability to run personal scripts, which makes sense. However, one thought did cross my mind. Clearly the disruptive teens were there for no other purpose than to make trouble. They did not deserve to be invited to participate in such an activity. So perhaps, moving forward, now that all TSL residents have had a chance to get to know us, we should change the Global Kids group.

Previously anyone could join up, for free, unmoderated, to be listed and contacted for events like this. Perhaps its time to close the door. Perhaps it is time to require new residents to get a reference, from either a current member (who presumably knows what being part of Global Kids Island is all about) or from a Linden (to prevent a cliché from keeping someone out). This way, we can signal that we are not for everyone and everyone is not for us. And we can grow more organically, based on the contacts we have already formed. GK Island would still be open to all but only those in the official group could participate in the main activities, be it a workshop, an award ceremony, or something else.

Something to ponder...

[HMDS] Storm's Report on First Word Spill

Here is what Storm had to say after running his first Word Spill on GK Island:

Wordspill went very good yesterday. We had over 13 people at one time that turned up for the game. We hope everyone can turn up next time. When I get to be come a instructor I will be able to get the events announced and hopefully some money for the pots. We had a very good pot yesterday with over 1000L, which Deaka luan won!

[HMDS] Word Spill Comes to GK Island

Storm convinced me today to add Word Spill to GK Island, for he and others to run. Word Spill is a fun game in which players compete to make words out of letters. After exploring the issue we decided to give it a shot.

I bought it ($8 US) and gave Storm control over the board. Storm is interested in seeing more activities like this on GK Island, to bring people over. Here's what he told me:

Storm Basiat: well it will be more fun for the people to come on and play some spelling games to get there spelling better and i think it would be intresting to see this land be so so poupler like the other sims like mecca and stuff
Storm Basiat: and i can become a instructor in a few days
You: What does it mean for you to become an instructor?
Storm Basiat: i can get events announced to the whole of the teen grid
Storm Basiat: and i get paid 500L for every event i do
    You: nice
Storm Basiat: aswlel like to get the gird more fun
You: So like, you could announce and get paid for running an event on GK island?
    Storm Basiat: indeed

It was interesting for me to learn how Linden Labs can simultaneously support the teens to take on leadership roles and encourage the creation of resident-led activities at the same time.

[HMDS] Storm's Take on the Party

Below is Storm's description of the event, followed by some of his photos and an interview he performed with a participant.

Hey, thank you to everyone that turned up. It was a very cool party is i must say my self! I hope to do another party soon. All money that was rased by buying drinks, food or any other objects at thye party will have gone to the raffle and everyone won atleast 20L if you was there when it started or it would have gone to the next GKid partys for buying new stuff!

I want to say a big thank you to the following people:

  • Everyone of the in game linden's who donated items.
  • Thanks blue lindens for you pizzas and BBQ they was good!
  • Lizzie Linden for turning up on the day and helping out!
  • Lucky Figtree for helping alot
  • Nik385 Doesburg Helping and bringing your Global Kids car to show off.

The Tecno Tiger Interview

Storm: Hello Tecno Tiger Welcome to the Global Kids Interview.
Tecno: Hey!
Storm: Thanks for taking part in this interview.
Tecno: No problem, i'm happy to help out other GK supports in anyway i can.
Storm: Thanks, nice to know.
Storm: Okey
Storm: Did you enjoy the party yesterday at the Global Kids Island?
Tecno: Well i enjoyed the time that i was there, i came late, but i was still able to see that it had been a great party, and heard great things from people i talked to afterwards who attended the whole thing :) I really regret missing some of it.
Storm: Ahh well at least you went
Storm: What was your best part at the party?
Tecno: Just knowing i'm with people who also support GK and having fun dancing with them :) I hope theres another party in the future.
Storm: Oh there will be one sometime next week hopefully or the week after we will do it on a week day as well so the gkid's can come.
Tecno: That would be great!
Tecno: Having GKids there as well.
Tecno: They'd be happy to see so many people belive in what GK stand for.
Storm: Indeed.
Storm: How can we make the parties better?
Tecno: The partys are great allready, but i guess a larger range of people could come if there where sections for people who lag easily.
Storm: You mean more land?
Tecno: Well an island is enough land, just using it all and dividing it to different sections so theres a larger rang of activities, meaning more people will come.
Storm: Yeah
Storm: You know any good activities then that we can buy?
Storm: We had games like Tin Bling's Word Hex and Ask Linden
Storm: And we had that cool bouncy house and thanks to blue linden who had that cool BBQ set and Pizzas.
Tecno: Well doing things like 'Word spill' and 'Teengo' would be fun. More group games. I have a Teengo board i'ld be happy to lend out for free for the event.
Tecno: Ha that BBQ would of gone well with Barry's cake.
Storm: Lol
Storm: Well how much does Word Spill cost?
Tecno: I'm not sure, around L$2000. You'll have to S Bob Bailly
Storm: We where going to play teengo but my buddy was not on.
Tecno: Well it's something to do next time.
Storm: Do you think the music people was playing good or bad due to lag?
Tecno: Well you can't have a party with out music. If people have a problem with it lagging there Second Life, they can easily just turn it off and play music using somthing like iTunes.
Storm: Yeah or there music player to listen to Linden Radio.
Tecno: yeah! Thats what i do, i love hearing the interviews
Storm: Yeah
Storm: You think it would be a good idea to do one big raffle for three winners or loads of little ones for everyone to win.
Tecno: I think a raffle with 3 winners would be better, because when your advertising you can tell people the amount they have a chance of winning. So with 3 people the amount of L$ that each of them would be higher than if there where loads of runner up prizes ect.
Storm: Do you think we should buy a Word Spill board?
Storm: If we do more events then we can do it though the week aswell.
Tecno: Well you could do something at the party, like have GK related merchandise for sale, to raise money towards getting things that will benefit GK or the island, and a word spill board would do this.
Storm: Yeah
Storm: Fancy building some like cars and t-shirts and bands ect?
Tecno: Yeah i'ld be more than happy to do this, i've all ready started workin on that badge.
Storm: Nice
Storm: Well is there anything else you would like to say?
Tecno: Not really, just thanks for organising these partys, i hope i can work with you in the future to make GK Island a better place, and benefit the organization.
Storm: Sure.
Storm: Well thankyou for coming to the Gloabl Kid's Party and Letting me interview you.
Tecno: No problem, speak to you soon!

[HMDS] Second Resident-Run Party on GK Island

This Saturday afternoon Storm Basiat ran his first, and our second, resident-run party on the island. Below is a report from resident Lucky Figtree who attended (even though she was recovering from the flu...)

Global Kids had a great party today! Storm Basiat was running it, and he did a great job. We had drink machines, a dance floor, a bounce house, pizza, a stage and more. Many teens showed up, one of them was Poshva Kolache who says, "it was TOTALLY fun, I won't forget about it for awhile!" It did get a little bit out of hand, but Lizzie Linden helped us with that. There was much dancing and bouncing, and I think Storm should at least help with the next party, if not run it. He did a great job keeping everyone in control, and he should be called on if you have any party needs. If you would like any pictures from the party, please send an In-Game IM to either Storm Basiat, or Lucky Figtree. Also, be sure to come to the next Global Kids activity! HOLY MEATBALLS, we have fun!

Lucky sent me the following photo (feel better soon Lucky!). Storm's photos will follow in an upcoming entry.

Based on the visitor logs, it seems at least four dozen people came over the course of the afternoon. This is amazing to me. Global Kids Island has been open for almost four months now - today the unique visitor number topped 2,000. What amazes me the most is that Global Kids has not organized any large scale organized public event since the end of March. Traffic has driven itself - or rather the teen residents have who enjoy GK Island so much they just want to see more happen there. Of course, we have our own plans, but they're not waiting. Does this means GK Island is starting to tip, supporting a community of teens to run at least some small aspect of it? If so, that is the type of leadership support that Global Kids is all about.

Here are some of my photos from the event, which I attended towards the end to help clean up:

[HMDS] A Visiting Peach

I received this Im from vanettda Lassard on the main grid today. He/she had the following to say:

Can I just say, "wow!" I love the journal, the concept and the exercise in taking an incredible tool like SL and doing something so positive. After a month of dodging casinos and sex shops, I almost cancelled my account. I sat long and hard and thought, what can I do to contribute to SL without creating more virtual noise? So I sat down and created a giant Peach -- a 3D afirmation that great simple ideas can literaly take flight here, if you give the idea an opprotunity to rise above the din of chair camping zombies. Thanks for the inspiration to do more and contribute my best. I've included a picture of my giant peach in your inventory ... can't wait for the next vol of the tale.)
Thank YOU venettda. Here is the photo I received:

[DMEC] Blog comments - "Worlds within Worlds"

Here is a very insightful blog entry by Arlene Goldbard, the writer of the Digital Media Essay Contest report, focusing on her generation's exclusion from the new world of digital media.

She writes:

If you don't know these worlds firsthand from a teenager in your household or neighborhood, I urge you to take a tour. I have seen the future, but I cannot enter fully into this strange new world.

[HMDS] Another Party Request

Maybe I just don't understand the teen grid yet, but we've just had our second request for a party to be held on GK Island. The thing is, no one is asking us to run it - and why should they, who needs us - but asking for permission to do it on their own.

Since we have no procedure in place it makes me a little nervous - something official that we are not planning - but if the TSL residents who know us and respect what we are about are interested in creating activities and spreading the "brand" it is certainly worth exploring. My conditions are that the official GK logo be used for promotions, that I be told in advance what the party plans are, and that I receive photos afterwards. So far so good.

Part of what interests me about these requests is the interest to do this on GK Island at all. Why not somewhere else? I asked Storm, the organizer, what he had in mind. He told me, "Because i like partys and i think it would be good for people to come to and it will make global kids more recognized." He said he would be teaching things as well, to make it educational. Teaching what exactly? "ahh well ill be teaching people how to make wings and stuff on sl."

Here is one of Storm's billboard ads for the event:

[HMDS] Reinventing Public Diplomacy in Second Life

As we recently reported, Global Kids' work in Second Life was recently honored by the USC Center on Public Diplomacy.

It turns out their ceremony in Second Life had more visitors than the one in person! What does that say? When you run a contest, make sure some of the finalists are from Second Life!

Here am I in a video that represented me, along with Jonah and Rafi from Global Kids.
