The Non-profit and Philanthropy Thread at the 2007 Second Life Community Convention

SATURDAY, AUGUST 25

EDUCATION TRACK
"The Public Good, Passion, and Learning"
Insights gathered from the MacArthur Foundation's journey into fieldbuilding in virtual worlds, digital media, and learning.

The education track keynote will be given by Connie Yowell, the Director of Education in the MacArthur Foundation's Program on Human and Community Development. In this role, she focuses on grants relating to public education, and on the implications for education of young people's use of digital media.

MACHINIMA TRACK
“Teens Making Machinima within Non-Profit Programs”

This all-teen panel will highlight animated movies created by TSL residents within after school programs for the MacArthur Foundation and UNICEF. Machinima will be screened and issues related to their production within a non-profit setting will be explored.

Panelists: Teen Second Life residents Nafiza Akter, Angela Paez, and Lucky Figtree.

“An Educational Non-profit's History of the Teen Grid: A Global Kids Adventure in Best Practices”

Through an interactive workshop, Global Kids' Online Leadership Director will unveil and explore their latest findings after a year and a half using Second Life in educational programs.

SOCIAL TRACK
"Best Practices in Bringing Non-profits into SL"

Representatives from non-profit organizations will discuss why they are using virtual worlds like Second Life to expand their reach and the affect it is having on their organizations, their work, and their field.

Moderator: John Lester (Pathfinder Linden), Boston Operations Director and Academic Program Manager at Linden Lab
Panelists: Anna Berthold (University of Southern California), Tori Horton (University of Southern California), Alex Struminger (UNICEF), Lori Bell (Alliance Library System), Susan Tenby (TechSoup.org), and Adam Aberman (Youth Venture).

2:30pm-03:30pm
BUSINESS TRACK
"The Role of Philanthropy in Virtual Worlds"

Representatives from foundations, corporations and governmental organizations will discuss why they are supporting non-profits to develop work within virtual worlds like Second Life and the affect this is having on the art and science of philanthropy.

Moderator: Barry Joseph, Online Leadership Director, Global Kids
Panelists: Benjamin Stokes (MacArthur Foundation), Chinwe Onyekere (Robert Wood Johnson Foundation), Allyson Knox (Microsoft Corporation), and Brad Lewis (Learn and Serve America).


All five presentations will be introduced by Craig Wacker, MacArthur Foundation Program Officer. Two papers will be produced from the SLCC proceedings, one on the Non-profit and Philanthropy Thread and one on the Education Track. Before, during and after the SLCC, two related dialogues will be held on the MacArthur Foundation’s Spotlight Blog (spotlight.macfound.org).
