[sl/intern/teen] DSTL Event!

Hey everyone, it's Lucky again :)
I'm very happy to say that I'm in the intern program once again; and on Saturday, I held my first event. It was a Human Barometer game, focusing on new ideas and suggestions for my group, Disability in Teen Second Life. In case you don't know, Human Barometer is a debate type game, where the host gives all the participants a statement; and asks them to think about it. Once they have an opinion on the said statement; each individual moves their avatar to one of three platforms labeled, 'Agree, Disagree or Unsure' based on what they're thinking. Once everyone is positioned on a platform, the host then asks them for opinions on what they think and believe in. See below:

For this Human Barometer event, I used these three statements:
- Conditions such as ADHD and ADD should not be classified as disabilities for the Disabilities in the Teen Second Life group.
- Teenagers with disabilities are treated differently in Teen Second Life then they would be treated offline
- When you're online, you feel more respected by people because there are no preconceived notions about who you are offline

The statements used sparked some really interesting opinions from everyone involved, and I really hope to incorporate some of them into the group. Brooke Barmy, Shawn Ay, Chrome Darkes, Mariel Voyunicef, and Hudson Wheeler all brought out the key points; and I hope to work with them on adding to these thoughts in the future.

As for putting together and running a Human Barometer..oh, man. I didn't think that it would be as hard to manage as it was. Coming up with the statements and putting together a bit of a debate script to use when the event started was really easy, and I had it done within a few minutes. Once it was time to start the event, however; and quite a few people started to show up; I became pretty nervous. As soon as we started the event, I was handling tons of IMs and questions, but as soon as all the questions were answered; everyone seemed to be ready. We started the event, and I couldn't have asked for it to run smoother. We had a few people shouting out; but I think everything went really well.

I'm really happy with how everyone had something to say, and wanted to get involved. All the interns that were present were such a great help, and I'll forever be in debt to Mariel who played devil's advocate. Thank you all for coming, and helping me make my event as amazing as it was.

I really think this is going to be an amazing intern term, and I can't wait to see what everyone else can come up with.
