This past Monday, January 18, Barry Joseph and I got the opportunity to conduct three intensive trainings for Jewish educators in Teaneck, New Jersey. The occasion was the "Jewish Day School Leadership Conference" which brought together some 500 jewish educators from 300 different institutions to the Marriot in Teaneck. It was a really interesting experience and exposure to the unique educational setting of Jewish day schools.

Our first training was a roundtable discussion with a dozen early childhood educators and directors, specifically focused on how they can use social media to better serve the community of teachers, parents and young children they support. It was a very dynamic and free-ranging discussion about various social media and social networking tools, touching on several of the practical, ethical, and programmatic challenges of using these technologies in a school setting. Rather than simply lecture them on what Global Kids has done, Barry and I did our best to lead a discussion about how to navigate these tools themselves and come up with strategies that they themselves can implement after the workshop.

It was a really fun way to start the day.

Immediately after our first training, Barry and I conducted a training called "Games-based Learning 101," which was attended by about 20 participants. We gave them a quick exposure to the main elements of games-based learning as an educational framework, but then quickly launched into an interactive demo of the Global Kids' youth-created game "Ayiti: the Cost of Life." A few them had already used the game in their classrooms, so this wasn't so hard for them to imagine using in a school setting.

Then we had the participants divide up into groups and play the "Grow-A-Game" card game developed by Tilt Factor. The groups enjoyed coming up with game concepts linked to different social values. I thought the different game concepts were quite creative and elaborate, given the constrained time frame.

Finally we left them with links to several free online and downloadable game-design programs, and a flyer with several resources for exploring education and games further.

Our last session of the day was on "Social Media and Constructionist Learning," and was our most challenging. Clearly these educators had been already fired up about social media, because our small conference room was packed with 50-some participants.

Of the suite of tools that we presented, the most popular one was clearly comic creation. Several of them saw comics as a very flexible and creative tool for getting young people to learn and demonstrate various subjects in a new way. So we spent a good bit of time talking about the various free comic creation tools that are out there.

We also covered such technologies as blogs, videos, wikis, online maps, shared documents, and social bookmarking. Throughout the presentation Barry and I made it clear that the point was not to jump onto whatever was the hottest technology, but to see what the educational needs are of the youth you are serving, and what tools can help you to meet those needs.

Tashawna is a high school senior in Brooklyn, NY. In the morning she leaves home for school listening to her MP3s, texting her friends about meeting up after school at Global Kids, where she participates in a theater program, or FIERCE, the community center for LGBT youth. On the weekend she'll go to church and, on any given day, visit MySpace and Facebook as often as she can. While she misses television and movies, she says she just can't find the time.

This describes what we can call Tashawna's distributed learning network, the most important places in her life where learning occurs. Not just at home, school and church but also through digital media, like MP3s, SMS and social networks, and at youth-serving institutions, like Global Kids and FIERCE. Some are places that require her presence, like school, while others are opt-in, like MySpace. But the learning she gathers across the nodes in her network are preparing her to succeed in the classrooms, workplaces, and civic arenas of the 21st Century.

And Tashawna is not alone. In part due to the changes in education, in part due to the affects of digital media, youth have a wide array of options for learning knowledge and developing skills. But how many youth feel in charge of their networks, or are even aware they exist as an interconnected whole? How do they learn to synthesize what they learn and communicate it to future employers and college admission staff who won't learn of their strengths on most school transcripts?

Global Kids, an afterschool program in New York City that supports youth like Tashawna to be global citizens and community leaders, has begun to explore just these questions. More specifically, we are increasingly asking the following: What do youth need to understand and strategically navigate their distributed learning networks? And how can youth-serving institutions support youth to document the associated learning that address 21st Century Skills that so often go unrecorded?

We are far from alone, however, in raising these concerns. For example, a number of recent initiatives supported by the MacArthur Foundation (from whom we too receive funds) are concerned with the distributed nature of learning experienced by today's young people and the challenge for both youth and learning institutions to integrate and assess it. While digital media has been a disruptive force supporting the fragmentation of learning environments it yet remains a potential source for coordinating and synthesizing the experience.

One approach to empowering youth to be more in charge of their learning and make more sense of their distributed learning network is to focus on youth's existing assets through both digital tools and offline activities to help them see the contours of their networks, understand their role as they traverse their learning nodes, and enhance their abilities to make connections amongst them. The following describes artifacts from three approaches Global Kids has undertaken to further explore these important issues.

Distributed Learning Maps

I was able above to describe Tashawna's distributed learning network because she showed it to me, on paper. It looked like this:

Actually, this was her second drawing. She didn't like her first because she was concerned it wasn't original. The first one looked like this:

When I first viewed these I paid attention to how she chose to group certain nodes. I noticed the distinctions between informal learning institutions and the formal, between portable digital media and online.

Of course, Tashawna doesn't walk around with a drawing of her learning network. I don't think she'd even thought about all the places she learns before I'd asked her to draw these pictures. But when I did it was easy for her to list on a sheet of paper places like home and school. I had to push her, however, to list all of her portable media devices, web sites and after school programs. She wasn't used to thinking about them all as sites of learning. After each one I asked her what she learned from that node:

Me: What do you learn from texting on you cellphone?
Tashawna: How to spell bad! (laughs)
Me: What else?
Tashawna: How to use technology more effectively to communicate.

At the end of the process, as a representative of one of her learning nodes, I was left with a broader understanding of Tashawna's network, of the resources she brings into our program, and where her learning with us might affect other sites of learning. From Tashawna's perspective, I hope she began to think, perhaps for the first time, about herself as a participant within her network, as the final source creating meaning by synthesizing the collected learning, and as the one ultimately responsible for learning how to best design and navigate her network, now and in the future.

Digital Literacy Transcript

Even if Tashawna could fully articulate the learning she receives outside of the standard school curriculum, how can she communicate it to others, in a capacity more formal than a college essay? Last year, we worked with Henry Jenkins' Project New Media Literacies to create something which might do just that: a Digital Literacy Transcript.

Henry Jenkins has identified and described the core literacies afforded by new media tools that are essential for full participation in our new digital age, such as Simulation, Negotiation, and Multitasking. Last year, Global Kids developed and implemented a curriculum that used social media to sharpen their literacies while assisting youth to understand how to think about them.

Below is Tashawna's transcript by the end of the school year:

The Transcript turns each literacy into a triangle-shaped badge. Each corner represents a different relationship with the literacy: I can recognize it, I can talk about it, and I can do it. At the beginning of our program each youth's Transcript was blank. Over the course of the program youth watched their Transcript grow as badges were earned through completing social media projects in the program while also submitting existing work (fan fiction, podcasts, etc.) that demonstrated evidence of their existing competencies. For example, you might note that Tashawna completed her "negotiation" badge, was working on her "networking" badge, and never began "performance."

The Transcript served as both a feedback mechanism to motivate and guide learning and an alternative transcript to show colleges or prospective employers about abilities which would otherwise go unrecognized.

Digital Literacy Portfolio

How could a college or potential employer viewing Tashawna's Digital Literacy Transcript know that she actually learned the referenced skills? And for those new to the terms - which, to be frank, are most of us - what could she do to make these concepts clear and concrete? Enter the Digital Media Portfolio.

Each Portfolio is personally curated by youth like Tashawna to offer an audio and visual tour of their social media productions that highlights the literacies developed through each social media project. This stands in contrast to the Digital Transcript, which is official and controlled by Global Kids.

Below is Tashawna's:

Global Kids is new to these three approaches - Distributed Learning Maps, Digital Literacy Transcripts and Digital Literacy Portfolios - but this year will expand them in a variety of contexts. The new MacArthur Foundation-funded Edge Project will allow us, as part of a broader initiative, to bring the Learning Maps into civic and cultural institutions that use digital media for learning. Meanwhile, the Transcripts and Portofolios will be rolled out in Winter 2010 within the New York City Public Library. Over the course of the next two years we will be documenting this work and sharing our findings with the broader community.

Next week, Global Kids will be leading a team of youth leaders to a landmark event in the world of digital learning. The event, titled Breakthrough Learning in a Digital Age, is being organized by the Cooney Center at Sesame Workshop, Common Sense Media and Google and will be held at the GooglePlex on October 27th and 28th. It's aimed at bringing attention to new forms of learning facilitated by technology, and will be attended by policymakers, industry leaders, education practitioners and researchers, and, of course, by digital youth. The youth team will consist of kids from Global Kids, the Bay Area Video Coalition and MOUSE, and will aim to bring in a youth voice to the forum in a variety of ways. We're really excited that the organizers put a priority on making sure actual teens were a part of this important conversation, as so often they aren't.

Leading up to the event, our Online Program's Director, Barry Joseph, has contributed to the Breakthrough Learning Blog with a post about using alternative assessment models to empower youth directed learning. We're excited about the post here at GK, as it's one of the first times we've articulated some of our recent efforts using digital transcripts, digital portfolios, and distributed learning maps as methods of alternative assessment that help youth to think critically about their learning across multiple spaces. Definitely check it out and comment!

We're also excited to release at the event our report, Meeting of Minds: Cross-Generational Dialogue on the Ethics of Digital Life, which highlights findings from the Focus Dialogues, held last Fall, which brought together parents, teachers and teens to talk about ethics online. We look forward to releasing the report more widely in the coming weeks.

For those that won't be at the event, you can watch the webcast on both the opening and main day and submit questions via Google Moderator.

In our pilot year of Media Masters, students worked on various media projects dealing with global issues and new media literacies, and at the end of the year compiled and contextualized this work into Digital Portfolios, to be used for college applications, job searching and school credit. I'm thrilled to share the portfolios from the program below, and to see all of them, just click the links at the bottom of the post.

On Saturday, June 27, 2009, over 100 New York City-area youth gathered at The New School to showcase their use of digital media and technology at (o.o), the first NYC Digital Youth Media and Technology Festival. While the youth enjoyed a game design competition, a project fair, a college and career readiness fair, and more, there was a constant backdrop of participatory voice through the use of Text The Mob, an application to capture the moment-by-moment thoughts, feelings, and energy of the crowd. To help you gain a better sense of what happened at this festival, here are the texts:

Hi, my name is Viveca and I am blogging about my Human Rights Map. This project is about events around the world that violated the rights of humans. I did mine on the Genocide in Rwanda, a tragic event that took place in 1994 during April.

I used three types of media: a photo, a video, and an article. I used the photo to show my audience the pain and aftermath of the genocide. I used the video in order to show people what the Rwandans went through during that blood-soaked month and I also used the article to give readers some text on the events that occurred that month. I chose this topic because I knew a lot about the genocide and I felt as though I should do a map about it.

While doing this project, I was able to get some more info about the genocide and why it happened in the first place. This project sort of made me sad at first because of all the tragedy and agony that surrounded this horrific event.

Hi guys! I am doing a blog about the Prospect Heights Campus Wikipedia Page. Basically, the whole Media Masters club took pieces of the school's information such as its racial make-up, its historic background, the schools inside of Prospect Heights, and other bits of information in order to make a page about the school on Wikipedia. We were split up into partners so that we could work on gathering the information in the different categories. Me and my partner Krystal were working on getting info about the racial breakdown of each of the schools inside PH. I really liked doing this project because it allowed me to learn more about the school I'm currently attending. This project also allowed me the chance of helping contribute to the creation of our personal website and I was very happy to be a part of it.

Cable in the Classroom has released the latest issue of Threshold Magazine. It goes out to 40,000 schools. This issue was coordinated by our partners at the M.I.T.s Project New Media Literacy. Global Kids was involved in three of the articles, each available for free as a pdf download here.

The first one, Henry Jenkin's "'Geeking Out' on Democracy," states the following:

Global Kids, a New York after-school organization, has been using Second Life to bring together youth leaders from around the world in a virtual playground where they can imagine and stage solutions to real-world problems. Global Kids used machinima-a technique to create realtime digital animation-to document the story of a child soldier in Uganda and circulate it via YouTube and other platforms to call attention to the plight of youth in the developing world.

Much like the HP [Harry Potter] Alliance, Global Kids is modeling ways we can bridge the gap between participatory culture and participatory democracy.

The second is an article co-written by GK's own Rafi Santo, descibing a day in the life of our innovative Media Master's program: "Mastering New Media."

Finally, the third, "The Future of Participatory Culture: A Threshold Forum," is an edited transcript of GK's Online Leadership Director, Barry Joseph, in dialogue with Henry Jenkins, Daniel T. Hickey, and John Palfrey discussing the rise of digital media and what it means for our students, our schools, and education in general.

Please check it out and help spread the word about this fantastic resource.

52 to 48 was the best project that I had to do. The best thing is that my picture had to be online so other people could see it... people from around the world. I like the fact that other people had to come sharing their work online, sharing their feelings about what they think about the election. Everybody came up with a way to show their feelings, some people had babies, people kissing, fathers and sons. The amazing thing thing is that everybody should a strong feeling about the election, everybody states that 52+ 48=100.

I drove into the investigative journalism world and tried to uncover the origins of the stereotype surrounding African-Americans and chicken. I dont want to tell you too much about what's said and what I found out because I want you to listen to it yourself but its worth the listen. Let me know what you think!! Thanks!!

This weekend I went with Shawna and two of the incredible GK Teen Leaders from the Media Masters program to the conference "Learning in a Participatory Culture", put on by our partners up at MIT, Project New Media Literacies.

For me, the event was characterized by a number of things that are marks of a great conference:

Great people. In addition to the great team at Project NML that we've been working with throughout the year on Media Masters, there were loads of other wonderful folks that we'd worked with or knew of coming into the conference, including people we've collaborated with from the Cooney Center for New Media, Harvard's GoodPlay Project, Common Sense Media and some great individuals in the field like Peggy Sheehy, KnowClue Kidd and Anne Collier that I've known from our work in the digital media and learning field. Even aside from all these great people, the participants generally were a special bunch. They were largely educators, which was a contrast to many of the conferences we often go to at GK, which always have some educators, but also can be heavy on game designers, coders, researchers/academics and non-profit folks. These were "educators on the edge", as I call them, people on the implementation end of participatory pedagogy and social media, and like us are looking for ways to change what learning looks like in either highly or somewhat institutionalized settings. In short, these were our peoples.

Great Participation. This was a group that was jazzed beyond belief. During the presentation we gave we couldn't even get to the more participatory activity we had planned as there was so much engagement during the Q&A session. And throughout the conference, many people were tweeting with great quotes, questions and general musings from the conference, and used the hashtag #nml09 on all of their tweets, creating a natural back channel for the conference. This was actually the first conference I've been at where there was a critical mass of people on twitter using a common hashtag, and I have to say that it was a lot of fun. (Kudos to project NML for training the crowd!)

Great Content. From the opening plenary with great presentations from the NML team through to the many panels and presentations throughout the day, all of the content of the conference was compelling. There was a lot of strategy sharing about how to bring new media into the classroom in meaningful ways, with ideas flying in every break out I attended. And, of course, Henry Jenkins sealed the deal with a thoughtful keynote based on recent writings outlining the natural relationship between new media literacies, participatory culture and civic engagement, which I hope to link to once it's up.

And more than anything else, I just enjoyed seeing the creation of a participatory culture of pedagogy. Educators coming together, connecting and sharing and participating in a movement that will hopefully change the way that education happens in the 21st century. I know that in many ways, it already is.

If you're interested, you can check out the presentation that Shawna and I gave about the Media Masters program below, which outlines a lot of the strategies that we've used to bring new media literacies into the afterschool setting. I've embedded it below, but to get the full context, view it here to see it with notes.

Also, check out the posts by GK Leaders Monel and Shonette with their thoughts on attending the conference.

The Conference at Massachusetts was amazing! They had people from different places sitting together learning about Global Kids Media Masters and other types of media workshops. The best part of the trip is that we went to a Afghanistan restaurant couple blocks to the hotel, the food was delicious, the hotel was splendid but I was a little unhappy because we could only stay for one night but I totally enjoy that night. My favorite part of the Conference is that I had to tell people about Media Masters, it felt really great and I enjoyed learning about some other part of the workshops like Wikipedia.

The fun part was that I was asking people questions about the conference. One of them was What are you expecting to gain from this conference? It was really fun coming from Brooklyn, New York to Cambridge, Massachusetts. I'm very happy and thankful that Rafi and Shawna and Global Kids make their decision to take me on that trip it was wonderful. Thank You

Hello again.

Today my blog will be about the conference at MIT I attended today.

As you may already know, MIT's Project New Media Literacies is actually a partner for the program of Global Kids I attend called Media Masters.

Two of the students who attend that after school activity were chosen to attend it.

We left New York at about four and made it to Boston at around ten that night where, after checking into our hotel were taken out for some Afghani food, which I actually found quite good.

We arrived at the conference at around eight the next morning and were assigned cameras which we used to video the conference and do brief interviews with people attending which we conducted in between workshops.

The conference revolved mostly around a project called New Media Literacy.

This is actually a program that focuses on how media can be integrated in the classroom and has an actual curriculum for teachers to follow should they choose to partake in the program.

The first thing that was done as the conference started was the introduction of the program to us. that introduction included a basic breakdown of its would be role as well as many examples of its uses and the skills that can be obtained by students through the use of this program, many of which Monel and I had already known through Media Masters.

We then broke apart to attend workshops that were done through out the day. I attended one in which the leaders of that particular workshop spoke of how the NML or new media literacy program could be used in the classroom and particularly in geography.

It was actually quite insightful to be given a focus upon which we could base our discussion though I do admit I forgot most of the intro to it but I do remember the discussion we had and it amazed me how much of what we do in media masters could be compared to the situations and topics we were given like appropriation and collective intelligence.

After lunch I went to a workshop held by Rafi and Shawna, who run the Media Masters program, in which they spoke of what media masters was about and of some of the projects we have done it our time in the program. Monel and I were really active participants in that one.

I then went to a follow up workshop of the first one I attended in which we discussed geography and mapping and the boundaries one crosses in media and how maps are actually interrelated to the prospect of play through board games which usually contain a map as the base of which one must follow though out the game.

The conference ended with another discussion on how New Media literacy can be used in daily life and in school, given by Henry Jenkins.

All in all it was fun and very informative.

You are probably wondering how Wikipedia comes in to this. We had a group project in which we had to create a Wikipedia page on Prospect Heights Campus. All of the students involved in his had to 'collect' information on all the schools in Prospect Heights Campus and while doing so use their 'Judgment' to ensure that the information was credible, get where I'm going?

Once everyone had information on their assigned topics we then began to put the information on the site and below is the result.

My memory on this is a little fuzzy but when we decided to create a wiki page on Prospect Heights High School Campus for our collective intelligence topic I was excited. Prospect Height Campus did not have a wiki page and we wanted people to know who we are!! So we broke it down in to sub-topics, like the different schools and themes, what the school was like in the past and some of the great things we're doing here. I was co-in-charge of the History section and the High School for Global Citizenship (my high school) and I was shocked by what I learned.

The first thing I learned and was completely shocked by the the fact that Prospect Heights was an all girls school when it first opened and went by the name of The Girls' Commercial High School (which I think now is not a bad idea!!). I also later learned that HSGC's prinicpal, Mr. Rau's grandmother attended The Girls' Commercial High School. Another shocker for me was the fact that Prospect heights high school ranked twelfth most violent among New York City's 125 high schools in 1990 by the Board of Education!! and it became one of the first schools to have scanning and full time police. I learned a lot about the other schools but it felt good to rep my school and make sure people know what great things are coming from HSGC!!!!

The process of putting it together was fun!! everyone had something they were in charge of that way the work load wasn't too heavy on any one person. We also get to check each other and correct things. The only thing I didn't like was the fact that wikipedia needs almost like proof of what your saying is true so we had to do a lot of research on things we already know. But it makes sense, you don't wan people give false or bad information. Over all this was fun.

Today I played another game. This one deals with life in Haiti and what one must do to survive in such an environment. Because of the country's current economic status and the fact that it is often a victim of many natural disasters it is difficult to make opportunities for yourself.

As the game begins you must choose out of four, what type of strategy you will have during the game. Whether it is to obtain money, to remain healthy, to obtain education or to keep happy, that will be your main focus in the game.

Unfortunately as the game continues you will find that the strategies will begin to overlap until, as per my experience, you will begin to focus more on obtaining money because that is what you will need to keep your family happy, healthy and able to get an education.

The concept of this game is to enable you to experiment with the characters so that you will figure out how to achieve your main objective.

Despite the fact that I cannot remember the exact site should one decide to type in ayiti games on google search you will find it.

I have been working on a wikipedia page that myself and other classmates did. We all gathered information and made a page for Prospect Heights Campus , which is a high school located in Brooklyn New York. The school was formerly one whole high school but after certain problems the school was converted in four (4) small schools. The building houses Brooklyn School for Music and Theater , Brooklyn School for Science and the Environment, International High School at Prospect Heights and the High School for Global Citizenship.

This task was quite interesting because we all had to gather information and we had no idea what kind of information the other person had gotten so there might have been several versions of the same information . Also we learned information about our schools that we didn't know and also information about the previous school in the building and what had happened that made the school close down in the first place.

This was fun to do anyway, and by gathering our information we used other sources to get information also, to put on our pages. In the end our information was useful to make the page successful for everyone to visit . If you are interested you can visit wikipedia and type in prospect heights campus to learn more.

Today we looked at situations related to human rights around the world and my specific situation is the Bhopal Gas Tragedy in India. I hadn't heard about this before today (most likely because it happened long before I was born) and learned a lot. It truly is a tragedy. To put it simply, a pesticide plant in the city of Bhopal, India released extremely dangerous chemicals and caused the death of an estimated 8,000, with many still suffering from the effect of such a disaster. I looked at print and video media that was record then and ones that looked back on it but no matter how you look at it, its very sad. This tragedy led to the creation of The International Medical Commission on Bhopal which aimed at responding to the long term health effect and aiding those who have been hurt.
This past Friday we had a really interesting workshop looking at serious games that dealt with real world issues. Through the lens of a number of serious games we explored the concepts of play and problem solving through experimentation, simulation and how representation of systems can happen in a game context, and credibility and bias involved in games, just as with any other media form.

You can check out the student blog posts about the different games they played below this post, and some of the fantastic pictures that were caught from the workshop.

Today I played the McDonald's video game at mcvideogame.com but this wasn't the first time i saw or played it. I can across this came I think about a yea ago with my sister. At the time I wasn't thinking about the point of view or message behind it, I only wanted to win, and to win you had to bribe important people, lie and steal. I don't want to think that this is what McDonald's had to do to get to where they are now. Basically the game made it seem like McDonald's was bad for the people and in more ways than one. They steal land, they produce and sell unhealthy products, knowing the food is unhealthy but still selling it, treating worker unfairly, all while CEO's tried to figure out how the keep groups who were against the quiet. It really is a shame if McDonald's is really like this. But its hard because even as I tried to play fair the only way to keep things going to to not play by the rules.

This game definitely had a point of view. It was clearly created by a group who is against what McDonald's has been doing. But how could they have known all the aspect? I don't complete trust it. The entire McDonald system can't be so corrupt at every level and not have been caught and stopped. The game, like all others, allowed me to take control and see things from a different point of view. However how much of a choice you get to make is up to the makers of the game. Games are different from other forms of media because they allow you to take control and make the choices where as other forms to media, like documentaries or new articles just allow you to see what going on. With games their are choices but the understanding that each of those choices have consequences.

The game that I played was Hurricane Katrina Tempest In Crescent City. The different ways that the game represented information about the issue was by showing a family that moved from New Orleans to New York and by showing images of houses, streets, water, people screaming for help. Things that make my game different from documentary, news article, photograph, radio story, or other form of media are that I'm the one who being effected from the hurricane, I'm the one who take action in the game to save people and my mother.

I used experimentation in order to figure out how to succeed in the game by reading instructions how to play the game and by failing one time then after I know how to succeed. I couldn't get to the next level so I die at the first time then I realize that you have to talk to people get information and don't let any material hit you.

The game's point of view was to illustrate how you could help people who have being affected by Hurricane katrina.

Things in general that make my game different from a documentary are that my game is experimentation its is a form of problem that they create and that you could solve the problem on your own.

I just played this game called Profit Seed. This game represents the controversy between farmers, GM and Monsanto for their genetically modified seeds that are infecting the farmers crops. The game represented information about the issue by discussing it on the different boards as well as using the game itself as an infomercial.

I used "play" in the game by learning the controls and figuring out the goal of the game in order to succeed. Once I figured out the goal, it was pretty easy to beat the game.

The game's point of view is that genetically modified seeds are wrong. In other words, what GM and Monsanto are doing is going against the balance of nature and that it shouldn't be continued.

Games are different from a news article because instead of just reading a piece of paper, you get to put yourself into the position of the person that situation is directed towards. You get to experience what they're going through rather than thinking about it.

The game showed how land was taken for native people and how workers weren't happy with the working conditions. what is often showed on tv is Mcdonald's is a company that helps the community and values their workers (which sometimes can be true but only when someone says something about). there was a lot of experimentation in this game in order to succeed, you have to keep your customers, worker and animal rights people happy all at the same time to make money. To succeed i had to fail here ad there to figure out how the game worked. what makes games different form documentary news articles photographs and other form of media is that its all in one it provides photographs , historical contacts, and a character view point.

Serious games, what a way to look at games differently! Who would have thought that games could be so interesting and could be that related to issues today.
I played a game called DARFUR IS DYING on one of the web sites ad wow that was something that I have never expected before. The game represented some people of African descent that had to carry water form one area to another to get water and carry it back so that they can help the village. The strange part was that there were police that would capture them and carry them to a camp where they could be raped and put to work non stop which is inhumane. The game represented this issue in different ways because it showed how a family would try to make a living of some sort and then every time to got close someone would come and try to take that away from them.

The game was different from a documentary , news article and others because it gave me a personal experience about the issues that was happening . It personally had a toll on the way I feel , the fact that I was the person that had the chance to save someone or the whole village life and I either help them succeed or I failed and that was the horrible part of the game, knowing that these things actually happen in real life.

The game did have a point of view that it was trying to get across and that is that people might actually be suffering more than we think . The issues might be show something that the article might not show, that the people are actually trying to do some thing with their life but it not happening.

The idea or thought that makes the game different from a documentary is the fact that it made it more real. We had a chance to experience what was happening first had and it made a difference on how we felt . Either it be that we helped that family or we failed the family. It showed us that the issues are real and there are different ways to experience it, and take into consideration that the game might have a more effect on you than the article would have. It would show you a different point of view of the actual issues and something that the article does not do is giving a more fictional view of what is actually happening in the country.

Well hello again. Today I'm logging about play, representation and credablity as said in the heading.

Another project from Media Master, we were to choose one of five games to play and then blog about how this affected our thoughts on the main topic of the game.

I chose Darfur is Dying, which is a very depressing game about the issues people in Darfur go through daily. Four of my 'children' were taken by militia while forraging for water before I decided to call it quits.

In Darfur there is a lack of food and water and that affects the survival rate of the people there, not to mention that te government and the military seem to be currupt and ed upraping the girls before beating them as well as the boys to death.

To be honest I was caught when ever I tried to get water so I did not win at any aspect of this game but my experimetation with the characters led to me getting closer and closer to winning every time. This is because I decided to 'run' and 'hide' in the direction that the game said wa sclosest to the water.

I believe that the game was trying to give more of an impression of political uprest and a need for help not only politicall but economically and agriculturally as well.

A game gives a more realistic piont of view to a situation that a documentary of news aritcle would paint in some ways and the fact is that more people would rather play a game than watch a documentary or read an article or even listen to a radio story about it.

And even though a picture is worth a thousand words those word are only on one point of view inseat of many like a game.

The link to this game is DarfurIsDying.com

I'm back and today I'm blogging about the project we did for negotiation.

We had to make our own comic about norms in today's society at Bitstrips, com. The link to mine is below! feel free to leave a comment..

You see in England as well as most European countries its the norm to leave your shoes on when you go into a house.

It gives the impression that you are uncivilized. if you don't.

Negotiation is an important skill to have because it helps you become more aware of how to act without offending people and breaking norms in society.

To act without being aware of what norms you are breaking is bad as you never know what kind of trouble you can get in for ignoring the norms of the people around you.

This is a comic that I made about cultural mis-steps. I made it about the etiquette in Japan. In this comic strip, I have a foreign person that is late to a business meeting and his boss is angry with him. In Japan, being late to work, school, and any other type of activity is considered very rude. So coming early is a daily norm for the Japanese people. In my opinion, negotiation is a very important skill because when it comes to negotiating, you can work out compromises or bargains with others.
People should spend time getting better at negotiation because a lot of the situations that turn violent in today's society could be solved with that skill alone. It benefits both sides of the problem. If we don't get better at negotiation, then there will be a lot more problems that will end badly for society. Learning to get better at negotiation will help improve our adaptation to different cultures and norms.

It was a little hard at first to think of a common faux pas but I decided to go with a faux pas the happens on dates. In my comic a couple (we'll call them Kenny and Nicole) on their first date is having a nice meal and getting to know each other, the date is going well and their really hitting it off until Nicole licks her plate!! A big "no no" when dining out...I'm guilty of subconsciously enjoying a meal to the point where I may lick the plate, but that only happens in the privacy of my room, that doesn't make it better or less disgusting but it's completely different to do something like that in public!! Licking the plate while on a date at a restaurant is a complete turn off!!
Negotiation is a very important skill..unless you want to look like a complete fool. When ever you step outside your comfort zone or away from your culture ( which is everyday living in NYC) you have to know the norms of your surroundings. Not only are you learning new things about different cultures, you also dont have to worry about feeling embarrassed or awkward around new or different people. The way I see it is its better to learn and understand norms and faux pas because you can better navigate in life, and if you choose not to ( which is fine..we do live in America) thats cool too...just don't be shocked if you don't have friends or a job. Jut take the time to understand your surroundings and observe how things work before you jump in.

My comic is about a employee who does not know how to greet his boss which often happens in life. Sometime we bring our personal life into places where it shouldn't be. Normally you would negotiation by greeting people so that you can think highly of you and you can treat them the same way.

Negotiation is an important skill because it helps us to get the things we want out of life. Negotiation applies to the real world because in life there gonna be times when you have to give up little things to do things that you might not wanna do and you don't want to come off as rude .We should be better at this because we cant always do what we want to do and the earlier we learn this the better off we will be. If we don't learn this then we will be unhappy and always wanting things to go our way even tho we cant. The only way you can be better at it is to learn as much as you can.

Below is the story that was in NML's latest e-newsletter, from researcher Flourish Klink observing Global Kids' Media Masters program and the student's of Prospect Heights Campus working to create their school's Wikipedia entry.

In Brooklyn, New York, in the first school in the United States to need metal detectors to keep its students safe, some students in an after-school classroom are preparing to make an impact on their world. Most of them use Wikipedia already, but now they've written their own Wikipedia entry - one that's about their high school. They've thought about its troubled history, they've used their New Media Literacy skills to their fullest, and they've pooled their thoughts in chat rooms and co-edited online documents. All that's left to do is put it up online and let other Wikipedians help make it even better. Some of the students say that now they're more likely to edit other Wikipedia pages themselves, correcting them when they see errors. But they're all just a little nervous, excited to see their work go live.

It takes some time before anyone's brave enough, but finally one student comes up and clicks "save page." Now Wikipedia has an entry about "Prospect Heights Campus." None of the students alone could have gathered the information necessary; none of the students alone could have brought the project to fruition. Together, they made it happen - and now they are all a little more empowered, a little more prepared to extend those collaboration skills into the world outside the classroom.

Hi once again it has been a while since i last put up a blog but this time it is really interesting. It is about people who take over and deny people of there human rights. I have been researching about the Lack Of Trials For Prisoners At Guantanamo Bay in Cuba and i have been shocked by what i have found. So many rights have been taken away from the prisoners there. Although they might have commit a crime they should be given a bit of freedom and what they have been doing is not right .
The human rights that i think is being taken away are :
-Everyone has the right to live in freedom and safety
-Everyone has the right not to be hurt or treated cruelly.
-Everyone has the right to a fair trial
-Everyone has the right to be presumed innocent until prove guilty

Along with some others but some one really needs to do something about what the prisoners are going through its not fair to be treated to fairly.
below is some pictures of what the prisoners are treated like

Hello once again as it has be quite some time since I have last blogged.

This one is for the "Talk about it" part of my transmedia navigation badge.

Those in media masters were expected to choose a human rights situation and find different forms of media to put on our google map.

The one I chose was the Jonestown Massacre in Georgetown. I chose this because I knew the story well as I had heard it before and because I knew that there would be many different types of media pertaining to this particular topic.

You can see it here, just look at the markers in Guyana:

The human rights ignored in the case of the Jonestown Massacre are:

* The right not to be harmed or treated cruelly.

* The right to seek asylum.

* The right to liberty and freedom.

Please bear in mind that these rights were denied by Jim Jones and his closest followers.

One of the ideas that's been on my mind recently is the importance of developing educational programs through a process of implementation and iteration. This is a somewhat intuitive concept, but has been raised for me recently as I engage in program and curriculum design in the Media Masters program, and as I watch as we begin training New York Public Library educators to implement our Playing 4 Keeps gaming program, the first online program at GK that we're scaling.

With Media Masters, an experimental pilot program that we're partnering with MIT's Project New Media Literacies to conduct, every piece of curriculum and the entire program design is brand new. In each project we engage in, we're taking guesses (educated, of course, but still guesses) as to whether something will work. Will students be interested in creating a wikipedia pages themselves? How long should a process like that take? How do we motivate participants to work collaboratively? And then we try it out, see what happens, circle back around and talk about how it worked. That implementation informs the way that we design and put into practice new projects that work off of similar principles.

I should also mention here that in this sort of incubation and development, and indeed in any youth program implementation, a critical part of the process is actually being in dialogue with the youth involved to see what they're actually interested in and what they'd like to see happen. (I wrote about this idea in my last post).

In Playing 4 Keeps, we incubated the program for three years, focusing on the core idea of having youth learn about serious issues and game design through the process of producing social issue oriented games. Each year, this core idea was implemented and then iterated upon, and we got to a place where we felt we knew enough about how this work can be conducted that we designed a model that could be replicated by others.

In the most basic sense, this process is the scientific method at work. Create a hypothesis, test it, refine it, test it again, refine more, and then see if it applies beyond a laboratory setting, in the wild, if you will. I'm excited to see that we're getting the opportunity to see how some of our work will play out beyond our organization, to see what the results of the years of implementation and iteration have wrought, and also seeing this as another opportunity to watch and refine the way we do our work.

Hi everyone
I recently did something very interesting in my afterschool program called Media Masters. We worked on a skill called Collective Intelligence and Networking. In our Collective Intelligence part of the assignment part we all joined together as story writers and we each wrote a line to a story the catch is that we could not have seen how the story began ,we could only see what the person before each other wrote and that made it a lot more interesting and creative. Of course our stories came out kinda mixed up but it was a lot of fun to find out what can happen when we put all our thoughts together.

The other part of our activity is Networking in this challenge we were given about six or seven school and several questions to answer but the catch was that we did not know any information about the schools also we were given a twenty minute dead line to find the information on Wikipedia which you know most of the time gives a lot of information .

The two activities was a lot of fun and got us thinking and a chance to act together as a team which each other .

We were supposed to blog about appropriation for our Christmas projects. More importantly I chose to blog about the type of licenses I would use should I need to protect my self from plagiarism. We discussed later last year appropriation and how people reuse peoples' works whether or not it is 'legal'.

I would prefer myself to have a license that revolves around:

                   Attribution
You let others copy, distribute, display, and perform your copyrighted work — and derivative works based upon it — but only if they give credit the way you request.

                   Share Alike
You allow others to distribute derivative works only under a license identical to the license that governs your work.

Noncommercial
You let others copy, distribute, display, and perform your work — and derivative works based upon it — but for noncommercial purposes only.

AND

                    No Derivative Works
You let others copy, distribute, display, and perform only verbatim copies of your work, not derivative works based upon it.

- Attribution No Derivatives License

This license allows for redistribution, commercial and non-commercial, as long as the credits goes to the owner of the product.

We created our own movie cover about something that we are interested in. The name of my movie is the "Biography of Bill Clinton", and it shows a man and a strive to succeed. It explains how he made it to be the 42nd president of the United States Of America, his tale of being the 15th democratic president elected. It tells the tale of the struggle between the press and his family, the constant struggle to keep them out of his personal life between him and his family.

My movie also tells the tale of him Clinton creating the William J. Clinton Foundation to promote and address international causes such as treatment and prevention of HIV/AIDS and global warming. It is a heart felt story that will touch the lives of many people and it will make his memories will forever for what he has done will forever be remembered.

Hello everybody.

The holiday break has been the perfect time to work on this amazing project: Making a Movie Poster. As you know there are so many political figures in history, international and local figures. They have left a foot step in the society. Some examples of local political figures are, George W. Bush, Nixon, and Abraham Lincoln. In the other hand we had international political figures, such as: Mahatma Gandhi, and Che Guevara. For my project I chose Malcolm X, he was one of the most important political figures in the United States between 1950 and 1965 who fought for African American Rights. He was a great leader and public speaker. I have been reading his biography for a short time, and I think his life was great. I think it is important for everybody to know who he really was, his ideals and goals for the community.

My movie would be about “The Life of Malcolm X”, it will be focused in his past and most importantly his actions for the community. It will be great if there is already a movie about this important person.

Check it out!

Hello Again
Today I'm blogging to tell you about my movie, hence the title "My Movie."
The actual title of my movie is "The 1763" Rebellion based of the actual tale of a former slave leading a rebellion in Guyana.

Cuffy, or Kofi (died in 1763), was an Akan person who was captured in his native West Africa and sold into slavery to work in the plantations of the Dutch colony of Berbice in present-day Guyana. He became famous because in 1763 he led a revolt of more than 2,500 slaves against the colony regime. When he lost Cuffy killed himself.

The anniversary of the Cuffy slave rebellion, February 23, has been Republic Day in Guyana since 1970. Cuffy is commemorated in the 1763 Monument in the Square of the Revolution in the capital Georgetown.

The monument, coincidentally, is the picture I used a my movie background.

As part of our series of lessons on appropriation, the teens in the program have been asked to select a political figure, past or present, to base a concept for a movie on. Once they figure out their figure and concept, each of them creates a movie poster for the movie using the BigHugeLabs poster creator, and posts the poster and movie description here on the blog. Looking forward to sharing some of their work with you!

It is challenging to even pick just a few standouts: An AIDS orphan in Ugandan exchanges text messages from her cell phone with a dozen teenagers in Teen Second Life; high school students conceive and produce a web-based game about local heroes during Hurricane Katrina; youth produce a seven-minute long animated movie about racism as an obstacle to education around the world; a high school class in Brooklyn uses a virtual world to learn about and create their own simulations about science; hundreds of young people across four virtual worlds watch Kofi Annan receive a major human rights award; incarcerated teens use a virtual world to learn how to create positive change in their real community; youth in Chicago and New York City collaborate online with paleotologists on a fossil dig in Tanzania; nearly 1,500 educators share knowledge and advice on how to use virtual worlds for education.
Global Kids would like to mark the new year by presenting a brief flyover of some of our major accomplishments over the past twelve months.

Playing 4 Keeps is an after-school program in which young people learn about global issues through playing and building socially-conscious online games. This year, we launched "Tempest in Crescent City" a web-based game that recognizes local heroes that emerged during the Hurricane Katrina disaster while educating its players about the essentials of disaster readiness.
While virtual worlds have enormous potential for education and civic engagement, they are largely inaccessible for people on the other side of the Digital Divide, particular people in the Global South. In order to address this disparity, Global Kids sponsored the development of a tool we call Switchboard. Switchboard is a fairly simple web-based system for exchanging short text messages between cell phones and virtual worlds such as Second Life. In September, Global Kids organized the first public test of Switchboard, facilitating a text conversation between a Victoria, a Ugandan teen, and a dozen young people in Teen Second Life.

At the start of this school year, Global Kids had the opportunity to create a new school-based program here in New York City at Global Kids' High School for Global Citizenship. Working with MIT's Project New Media Literacies, we've been working to create a program based off of activities developed at MIT that promote civic learning and participation through a wide range of participatory media tools. Through blogging, mapping, photography, video production and more, teens in Media Masters work to create a Digital Portfolio of media artifacts that along with a Digital Transcript will display their acquisition of new media literacies. You can check out some of the program's early work here.

This group of teens has worked for three years to inform the MacArthur Foundation's Digital Media and Learning initiative through their unique voices and perspectives as young people. In the past year, they've worked with Harvard's Goodplay Project, MIT's Project New Media Literacies, the Pew Internet and American Life Project and others to help keep the overall MacArthur initiative grounded in the real experiences and opinions of teens.

In April, Global Kids launched RezEd.org, a community of practice that brings attention to the myriad ways virtual worlds are being used for learning in various settings. RezEd covers a broad educational virtual worlds through news updates; multimedia resources; a podcast series with youth, theorists, practitioners and experts in the field; various digital media resources, weekly best practices, guest-moderated discussions, etc. Although still in beta, RezEd experienced tremendous growth, growing from a handful of educators largely active in Second Life to 1,400 members using a variety of virtual world platforms for learning.

As part of our work to support educators using virtual worlds in their work, Global Kids released the free Second Life curriculum in September. The curriculum, divided into nine levels, covers everything an educator or student would need to know to use Second Life, whether on their own or within an educational setting. Released under a Creative Commons license, the curriculum has already been adapted by educators into different formats, including a print version and a digital booklet in Second Life.

For the past couple of weeks in Media Masters, we've been spending time on the idea of appropriation, defined in NML's white paper as the ability to meaningfully sample and remix media content. Before we delved into what appropriation means in a global issue context and having the students utilize this skill through their own media creation, we decided that it would be relevant to learn and talk about the concepts and practices around Intellectual Property, Fair Use, and Creative Commons. As the program is all about having teens become producers of media, it's important that they understand not only what the concept of IP is and when it's ok to use other people's work in their own media creations, but also to understand how to be empowered to make decisions about how other people use their creative works.

We look forward to sharing on this blog some of their thoughts on the subject and their own media appropriation projects, but I thought in the meantime I might post some skits they did about various concepts regarding Creative Commons. Enjoy!

Hi

Its me once again to talk about another one of my projects for Media Masters.

When we first did the "From 48 to 52" project I was really confused as to what it meant.

We started out by looking at a site that showed people who supported the idea of combining those who voted for President Elect Barack Obama and Senator John McCain for the betterment of America, or at least that was my interpretation of what was going on.

http://www.zefrank.com/from52to48withlove/index4.html is actually the site if you wish to visit it.

For the project we had to make our own signs to add to the site though the words came out backwards.

I chose that phrase as it was the first one that popped into my head that suited my needs so i just changed it a bit.

It was rather fun to do though.

Hello everybody.

This project was so interesting for me, why, because at the beginning I didn't know what "From 52 to 48 With Love" meant, I was so confused about this. After we took a look at some of the photos people took, then I really understood what it really meant. There were so many different pictures. I was so impressed with the work other people did, they were so creative. Our project was to create something similar, and I thought that there was nothing left for us, after we saw those pictures. But I tried my best; I tried to come with something simple. It was a great idea for us to make this kind of stuff. I really learn a lot from this project, but most importantly about the past presidential election. Check it out!!

I felt excited to know that what I was creating was going to be put in a public online space. It made me think that there was going to be more activities like this further on in the future during this project. I think that it is important to work with people that think differently from me because I can get someone else's opinion from the other side of the playing field. You can get a better understanding of why they feel the way they feel about a certain topic. Posting your thoughts online is a valid form of reaching to people from the other side.

It's me again, Shakera. Shakera here lol, right now I feel the need to talk about my experience with the whole from 52 to 48 with love. I have never heard of this site before because I didn't think that people would be patriotic enough to start a website showing support to both parties in which they supported. In the days latter days before the election I saw some videos about some McCain supporters and the had the worst things to say about Obama, I didn't think that it was fair but I figured that there would be feuding all over the country because of racism, sexism etc. When I stumbled across this site I really didn't think that Obama and McCain supporters would get along but evidently they did.

It was nice to see how everyone was supporting each and thinking of better ways to make this country one . I was actually super excited about that part in particular. I was kinda second guessing myself about making a post because of the fact that I didn't even vote but at the same time, I thought that it would be kool to show my support for President elect Obama and also allow the McCain supporters to know that the love is still there.

I think on a political level it's important to work with people who are different from ourselves because it give you a better outlook on what the situation is and the many solutions that may be available to solve the problem if there is one. As opposed to face-to-face, posting my thoughts in an online forum is a valid way to reach out to the "other side" because it's safer, more expressive, and you have a peace of mind when writing about it.

Hey my name is Shonell Richmond and I am a part of Media Masters, a program in my school by GLOBAL KIDS and its cool. We get to blog about our experiences .

In the picture above I drew a map of Africa or something like Africa lol but it was loads of fun doing it . When I drew the map and considered how it was laid out, like what map I was going to use was simple. I used the map of Africa because of its space and countries that it has that represents the things that I like to do and it represents my background of where my ancestors came from.

Expressing my digital life in the form of a digital map is better than putting it down on a piece of paper or filing out an online profile because I get to express myself and be more excited about what I did in the map. I get to share with everyone what I like to do and what is important and fun to me.

Making a map of my digital did alter the way I think about the use of digital media in a way because I get to show everyone what I think is important. It makes me think about how I see the world that I am in, for example how I put what I do the most on the internet in a bigger position than the most important things like school in the small position.

Overall I think that making the map was an enjoyable experience. It was fun and I got to share my ideas with the people around me.

This is my picture from 52 to 48 with love. I know that this will be shared with tons of people. But I like that because everybody will know about my ideas and will know how I feel about the election. Also I want people to share their ideas with me. It was good to make something everybody will read and have opinions.

It is important to work with people that think differently because you both share your ideas and you gain ideas from also you'll know more about the topic the other person is telling you.

I like to share my thoughts with other people because I want them to know about my ideals. Also people with get something that may help them in the future.

I wanted my map to look nice because I use a lot of websites on the internet. I get online every weekdays. I used colors and I made the websites that I use everyday bigger than the ones I use often. The map that I made expressed how many times I use the internet. When I make a list people don't really pay much attention to it, it expresses less feelings about websites. Yes, it made me think that technology is extremely amazing, it's fun and it makes me realize that the world would be a different place without technology.

Hi my name is Shonette and I am part of a group that is part of Global Kids called Media Masters.

Well the other day we, the people in my group, made some maps to explain what media meant to us.

I drew a map of South America in the middle to represent my home continent. In the small green thing below, THE SEA OF MUSIC, is Fanfic which is short for Fanfiction as in fanfiction.net.

This is very important to me as I often write stories there to and post for the world to see.

Next to that is Quizzila, a site for qiuzzes that I am also a part of.

Yahoo because I am a part of yahoo mail and often use Yahoo as my search engine.

Xanga, face book and Live Journal (LJ) aren't that important but I use them all as a means to stay in contact with my friends and penpals.

The same can be said about Myspace and Hi5. Hi5 was placed where it was because it represents how close it is to me since it was placed near my home country.

Stories and art are important to me since they go hand in hand with fanfic and hi5 and such.

School on the other hand, while important to me was never placed in the same view as media.

The sea of quotes represents my hobby of collecting them and the ISLANDS OF ANIME represent the fact that anime plays a role in what I do and how it relates to me.

Virus and Anti Virus represent the dangers of media and THE UNKNOWN SHORES represent all that is unknown about it.

I read the pictures that other people created on the from 52 to 48 website. I love one of them very much, a girl and a boy are kissing. One is blue and the other is red. I love that idea very much and the other pictures are also very creative. I didn't know what the numbers 52 and 48 meant. I thought it may be some kind of law of something else. And I hear that is about the election, I thought that is a very creative idea to express your voice to another side. Even I am not a United States citizen, but I also love this country like any citizen in this country. I also live in this country. We all live in the same country, for me it doesn't matter who won the election. I only want a president that can lead us to a better life. I want to tell the red and blue that we are together. My idea is very similar to other people's. But we have the purpose, we want to be united and bounding to each other.

Hey there my name is Neville, I'm from Brooklyn New York and I just joined Media Masters last week. In last week's activity, we played a game (icebreaker) called "what are you doing". The game involved us going around asking other people what are you doing then you have to do what the person said what they were doing.

Then after the game we wrote what Obama's victory meant to us. From there we viewed the website from 52 to 42. I was very shocked to see other Americans reaching out to each other. I have always viewed America as a place where it's every man for himself. But to see a son who voted for Obama telling his father that he still loved him even though the father voted for McCain. Then on top of that everyone who uploaded something looked like they put a lot of effort into it without even trying. When they told us that we were going to be making our own I was like WOW. I didn't have a idea what to make, I felt really lost like a kid in candy store. So I ended up looking at other people's work to get a idea of what to do. I saw a picture of a donkey and a elephant then it hit me.

However, I live in The Bronx, and study in Brooklyn. So this map shows D train line I take from my home to my school; thus, I use orange for the train line and marked some of important stops and renamed them for websites and software I use most often online. For example, MSN, YAHOO Messenger, and QQ, is the first software to pop out. And I will check Facebook, and xiaonei.com. lastly, Google, and Baidu.com are two websites where I do research.

Hello everyone my name is Mark, I am from Russia. I am in media masters for 2 days and I have done map picture and picture 48+52. My decision when I made the map was not hard. I thought of doing something simple and to make all my word to fit in paper and to make then visible. I have put the things that I do with in my computer and few of that I do outside of computer. Making the digital map is different from filing out on online profile because making map is creative its attracting people but the profile is boring and people get bored when they read to much. Digital life alter the way I thing about using technology and digital media because when I made this map I saw that I got msn and games bigger then the rest I realize that I am spending too much time on them and I should do everything equal and have time for other things then just siting and spending my time for nothing when I chat with people about some stuff I forget next day.

Here's my map:

Hey wats up everybody , my name is shakera and this is my very first blog. Am I excited? Yes indeed! Well today I'm writing about my digital life. What's that? It's basically a self made map telling what I like and how my media intelligence is dispersed around cyberspace. In the process of making my map I thought of where I spend most of my time and also where I spend least of my time. The blueprint was based on the sites I visit on day to day basis and the others are just random things I do online and sites where I'm just a member.

Expressing my digital life in the form of a digital map is very different from making a list or filling out an online profile because that's where my personality comes out and I cold really show who I am in a very modern way. While I was making this digital map my views about technology and digital media were changed a bit because I always thought that technology was always complex and hard to understand, but after I finished with my map I kinda had a second view about media and technology and I see it as a more easy, cool way to express my opinions. To add to that, I also saw what kind of person I am by just looking at the size of different sites I made and how much time I spend there.

Hey my name is Amana. Last week in Media Masters was my first week and I'm hooked. We looked at this really cool website:
http://www.zefrank.com/from52to48withlove/index4.html

It was really cool, this website is a bunch of photos that people put up, basically saying that though the recent election pretty much tore the United States in two, now that it's over something had to be done in order to bring us back together. People from all over wrote letters or made signs in the hopes of reconciling with the other half. I was shocked to see so many people reaching out and taking time out of their lives to speak to the other half. 52 (Obama supports) were reaching out to 48 (Mccain supports) and the same the other way, no one was bitter or upset, everyone was hopeful and supportive. I was excited to know that i was going to get a chance to post a photo of my own. I decided to go with "We'll be the United States, No Matter Who Won" and I'm proud that i took part in this. I'm looking forward to the other projects we'll be doing in Media Masters.

At first, when I made my digital map, I had to consider the numerous social networks that I had accounts on. I also had to consider how I was gonna create the map such as the shape, the color, and the size of he map. In the end, I decided to make a digital map in the shape of a globe, but with a twist. I created the map using all of my social networks and a few commonly used websites and turned them into geographical features. It's different from making a list or filling out an online profile because it's not just a piece of paper with words, it's a completely different way of showing what websites you use in your daily life. This map made me think about other websites that are more popular than MySpace or FaceBook. It made me think about how I use technology and what I use it for rather than why I use it.

This picture represent my digital life in my everyday life. I considered the way I did my digital map the best way of describing how I am I separates all my web pages in computer I do not like to have more than 2 pages open at the same time such as the maps nothing is connecting in my maps how you can see.
Expressing my digital life in the form of a map better than making a list or filling out and online profile because doing a map is not something that we do everyday so I think is a very creative way of showing what you do everyday in your computer.
Making a map of my digital life alter the way I think because now I see that I got to stop going to myspace for a while I been there for hours everyday you can see it in my map OMG I think I been over use it also I alter the way I think about internet because I see that I been close to other web pages and I am going to start watching more pages.

Hello everybody.

My name is Sebastian Solis and this is my first blog. For the first class we had I created a project called Digital Life Map. It represents what are some of the things I experience with almost everyday. I think that there are many social networking sites were you can share ideas with other. Why don't we use them to make a difference? Some of the social networking sites I use are, my space, hi 5, facebook, hotmail, yahoo, itunes, etc. It means we are connected; I like to stay connected with my family and friends. It doesn’t really look like a map, but what I wanted to show is that they are all connected to my life, connected to the center, they are all necessary for me. It looks like the solar system and my life is like the sun. Check it out!!

I'm excited to announce to the blog-o-webs today the launch of GK's newest project, the Media Masters afterschool program! Media Masters, or M(2), is our first attempt at creating a face to face afterschool program that has students utilizing a wide range of participatory media and Web 2.0 tools (as opposed to focusing on one medium) to gain leadership and media literacy skills in the context of addressing global and local issues.

We're working with our incredible partners at MIT's Project New Media Literacies to take the activities that they've been developing in their Learning Library to promote new media literacy acquisition and adapt them to GK's style of global issue education in the afterschool setting.

As part of the program, teens involved will be creating a ton of different types of media ranging from more traditional photos and video to things like comics, online maps and wikipedia entries. Make sure to watch the Media Masters section of this blog to see things as they post them. At the end of the year, the teens will be putting together their Digital Portfolio of these media artifacts, which will be paired with a Digital Transcript that we give them, the combination of which will display their "media mastery".

We're incredibly excited about this pilot program, which is very much a big experiment for us. And we're thrilled that MIT will be researching the whole thing, to help us see clearly how the experiment goes. We'll be checking back frequently with updates. Wish us luck, our first session at the Prospect Heights campus in Brooklyn is this Friday!
